Wahpeton, North Dakota - World's Largest Catfish

As you are going across the river the park is on the ND side of the of the river. On the South side of the highway and the giant fish is on a platform with a fence around it. [Jason Small, 06/23/2003]

Locally referred to as the Wahpper, this 40' catfish is billed as the world's largest. When we checked into the motel the clerk asked why we had come to Wahpeton. We replied, "We have come to see the catfish."

We were given directions and the next morning went to see the fish. A man was doing repairs and started to move aside to allow us to take pictures. We asked that he let us take his picture along with us, and we then learned that he was the artist who had created this sculpture along with many others. His name is Dave Oswald, from Sparta, WI. His company is called DWO Fiberglass Company......very interesting fellow. [Tony, 10/21/2000]

This is no run-down forgotten titan, but a modern full-color sculpture that sets new standards in giant fish. And, unlike most roadside water catches, this one is nicely mounted on a giant plaque, as if it would turn its head any minute and start singing "Don’t worry, be happy." Its beauty makes up for the fact that Wahpeton doesn’t have a transmission shop. Fine viewing while you wait for the tow truck from Fargo. [K. Ward, 09/23/2000]

Being a native North Dakotan, I got a big kick out of your "Titans of the North" page, with all the great "monuments" in ND. However, I wonder if you know about the latest addition to this great collection. It's a large catfish, aka "Whopper", in Wahpeton, ND. I noticed it last summer on one of my many passes through there. [Terri W., 01/02/1999]
