Jene LaRocque, son of "Earl Bunyan" statue builder Fred LaRocque, was granted a longstanding wish to be buried under Earl, in New Town, North Dakota. Jene, 83, died in a Montana nursing home in late September; he was cremated, shipped, and interred in New Town in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and an American Legion color guard. ... New Town, North Dakota - Earl Bunyon Earl Bunyon, Paul Bunyan's brother, was dreamed up by Fred and Berd LaRocque, New Town, ND, in 1958. The restoration of the statue of Earl Bunyon in New Town is complete. I would estimate Earl's height at over 20 feet, and he is now holding a branding iron. Both Fred & Berd have been dead for some time, and the statue serves as a marker for their graves. [DLDebertin, 08/22/1998]
