1967 view of Bunyan Muffler Man. Flagstaff, Arizona - Paul Bunyan Muffler Man - 1967

Muffler Man iconThis is more of an interesting historical update. My mom recently passed away, and while going through some old family photo albums I found this photo from July 23, 1967, showing a "Paul Bunyan" MM on Flagstaff's main street (Hwy 66) in the parking lot of the Lumberjack Cafe. I have no idea if this is, in fact, the same MM that now lives on the campus of Northern Arizona University, but I think it stands to reason that it is since there are no other MM's in Flagstaff today. [Roy Holt, 03/24/2009]

[RA: If you look down the sidewalk, on the far side of the Lumberjack Cafe, you'll see the top half of another Bunyan Muffler Man! Seems logical to assume both these giants cut a swath to the stadium where Flagstaff's two Bunyans stand today.]

Flagstaff, Arizona - Lumberjack Muffler Man

Muffler Man iconThe Lumberjack outside of the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Arizona was the victim of beer-soaked pranksters in February, 2004. I guess they cut him down by his ankles and beheaded him. [Juti, 08/20/2004]

Flagstaff, Arizona - Two Lumberjacks

Muffler Man iconThere are two lumberjack muffler men -- one inside and one outside the Walkup Skydome stadium at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. (NAU's sports teams are nicknamed, curiously enough, the Lumberjacks). I have heard that both lumberjacks previously stood in front of The Lumberjack Cafe, which is now Granny's Closet, on Route 66 in Flagstaff. [Martin Ince, 10/13/1997]

[RA: Tipster Norm Richie comments: "We never called it a Muffler Man, but the one pictured for Tucson is a dead ringer for the one that sat in front of the Lumberjack Cafe in Flagstaff, AZ for years in the '60s." And "Crissy" writes: "My friends in Flagstaff explained to me that the college kids steal the axe from one of the muffler men every year as a prank of some sort." ]
