For a short period, visitors to the National Infantry Museum, Fort Benning, Georgia, had an opportunity to walk on Saddam Hussein's face. A large oil painting of the Iraqi leader, captured by soldiers in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in April, was displayed under glass on the floor of the museum entrance. In August, museum officials were ordered to remove the painting and place it in storage.
Exhibits designed to humiliate and insult mass murdering dictators are nothing new at the museum. For decades, they have displayed a large bust of Adolf Hitler liberated by a GI in Germany and turned into a trash can. Museum officials were awaiting the arrival of a Saddam statue head, perhaps slated for similar treatment.
The National Infantry Museum is home to many interesting and unusual items, including the grave of Calculator the Dog. [09/22/2003]
